There is an overwhelming amount of information available now, especially with the easy access of the internet. Unfortunately, anyone can offer advice. Whether it is good information or not, is a whole different matter. The people we direct you to here are the scientists and experts in their fields (not just self-proclaimed ones). Their methods and principles are based on up-to-date research and information. They are also the leading proponents of dog-friendly, positive methods.

The Dog Days Top 10 List

These are game-changers. Some were the first of their kind – starting a new way of thinking; some are the best of their kind. All worth a read (or view!)

One of the very best teaching and training books. Not exclusively a dog training book – it outlines 8 methods for putting an end to all kinds of unwanted behavior without yelling, threats, force, punishment, guilt trips. The 10 laws of shaping behavior through affection training; how to combat your own addictions; how to deal with such difficult problems as a moody spouse, an trying teen, or an elderly parent; AND housetraining the dog, improving your golf game, keeping the cat off the table, and way more! Although this book does not go into the hands on methods, it is an invaluable read to get you ready and give you a whole new approach.

Whatever the task, whether keeping a four-year-old quiet in public, housetraining a puppy, coaching a team, or memorizing a poem, it will go faster, better, and be more fun if you know how to use reinforcement. — Karen Pryor

Reaching the Animal Mind is about an entirely new way to see, understand ,and communicate with animals. Animals are a lot smarter and more aware than we used to think. They show humor, affection, and regret, uncanny intelligence and depth of thought, but you  have to know how to bring it out.

It is a joy to work with a dog who actively engages in the learning process—not blindly following orders—but actively  problem-solving with you. Cooperation between human and dog will help you build a relationship that will surprise you in its depth and versatility and The Thinking Dog is your road map!

The book that has shaped modern thinking about canine behavior and the relationship between dogs and humans has been revised. Dogs are not humans. Dogs are clever and complex creatures that humans need to take the time to understand in order to live together successfully.

Trish McConnell takes a look at canine emotions and body language. Like all her books, this one is written in a way that the average dog owner can follow but brings the latest scientific information that trainers and dog enthusiasts can use.

Some breeds of dogs and mixes have a reputation as impossible to train. Hounds, terriers, and other breeds are often called pig-headed and even untrainable. Learn these When Pigs Fly methods and take advantage of the natural strengths of these independent and intelligent dogs. Help your dog become a wonderful companion or a formidable canine athlete. Clicker and reward-based training that is fun to use.

This extraordinary book fills the gap between contemporary training technology and ethics. With indelible wit and wisdom, Sdao exposes the naked emperor of excessive control and replaces him with the keys to healthful behavior and lasting relationships. This book will improve more than a dog’s life—it will be required reading for the students in all my behavior classes.
Susan G. Friedman, Ph.D., Dept. of Psychology, Utah State University,

Kathy Sdao is as wise, witty, warm, and adventurous on paper as she is on the lecture platform. This is a wonderful book about an issue deep and dear to all of us: how to learn to be thoughtful, kind, and generous to our dogs, to each other, and to ourselves, in a world that pressures us to be harsh, resistant, and controlling instead.
Karen Pryor, Author of Reaching the Animal Mind, founder of

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with this lovely lady a number of years ago at an international conference. She is gracious and kind and so is the way she trains. Oh, and by the way, if you get your hands on For The Love of Dogs, have lots of tissues handy.

Puppy Class

Some of the reasons getting your young puppy into a GOOD puppy class is so important.

This is a great article. The information in it needs to hit the mainstream. After almost 20 years of teaching puppy classes, there still are far too few puppies making it into puppy classes and not enough starting early enough. Please read this and spread the word.

This is a great little video! I would reiterate that your dog does NOT need to contact dogs to accomplish socialization. Staying at a distance will keep them safe with dogs that you don’t know and allow your pup to get socialized to a greater variety of dogs.

Spaying and Neutering

Leaving your dog intact into adolescence is something that only committed and responsible people should consider. I am not advocating that everyone delay spaying and neutering. I AM encouraging people to educate themselves and consider the pros and cons on both sides. Then you can make the right choice for your particular dog, lifestyle and family. If you would like more information, Dr. Becker has 3 additional videos on this topic on her YouTube channel.

Body Language

This is an aspect of training and living with dogs that is often missed. Once you become familiar with more subtle signs, you will realize our dogs are constantly communicating. When we learn to listen, we can improve the quality of their lives by recognizing when they are stressed, unsure or over-aroused.

Separation Anxiety

A dog being comfortable on their own is a vital life skill. Without it, both the dog and the family will be impacted. Prevention is best. Start your puppy or new dog on home alone training! separation anxiety

Kids and Dogs

Teaching children to be appropriate and safe around dogs is so important. Whether you have a dog in your family or not, all children should be taught how to behave and interact.
